Several melon varieties grow well in Illinois! They are typically in-season for Illinois between June and September. Melons taste great by themselves or with other fruits in a salad.
Melons are high in vitamin C, fat free, and very low in sodium (salt) or sodium free.
Choosing and Storing Melon
Cantaloupe: Choose cantaloupe melons that are heavy for their size, sweet smelling, and without cuts or bruised skin. They should be a yellowish or cream color.
Honeydew Melon: Honeydew melon should have a waxy surface, a circular shape, and be heavy for their size.
Watermelon: Look for watermelons that feel heavy for their size and skin that does not have punctures or cuts. Stems should be dry.
Store uncut melons at room temperature. Once cut, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
