Changes are Here for SNAP Benefits
What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps people and families with low incomes purchase eligible food items. SNAP benefits can also be used to buy seeds and plants that grow food in home gardens. SNAP is the largest nutrition assistance program in the United States and is managed by the United States Department of Agriculture.
In Illinois, SNAP benefits are provided on an Illinois Link Card through the Illinois Department of Human Services.
Significant changes to SNAP happened due to a new federal law passed in July of 2025. Whether a person can receive SNAP benefits depends on multiple factors, such as their income, expenses, and the number of people who live and eat together in their household.
Some adults need to meet new SNAP work requirements. To find out if this impacts you, use the Work Requirements Screener.
